the DEEP TERRANE project

deep terrane is an open-ended, flexible, and highly collaborative series of pieces, projects, & performances concerned with temporal experience, form, affect, vibration, and community. Each piece is created through intense collaboration between the composer and participating musicians and ensembles:

  • there is no written score

  • the score is a sensibility, an attunement of one’s listening, an intention towards specific ideas

  • the score is an intentional but reciprocal experience guided by the composer and in response to the performers’ input through a series of workshops

  • the piece is not an improvisation

  • the ensemble must work in person with the composer

  • the composer must perform with the ensemble

  • a performance must be immediately preceded by several days of workshopping

Each deep terrane has its own idiosyncratic and inscrutable concerns which condition the collaboration. Each distinct deep terrane can be performed multiple times, though each performance will be different: what is consistent from one performance to the next is the intention and the sensibility. New deep terranes can be initiated and commissioned, or ensembles can work with the composer on existing deep terranes. Some deep terranes cannot be performed by anyone other than the initiating musicians. Each deep terrane is an invitation into a particular sensibility towards togetherness, experience through time, and haptic sensation.
